Google Partners With Crusoe Energy For Natural Gas Data Center

Google is partnering with Crusoe Energy to develop the Goodnight data center campus in Armstrong County, Texas. The facility will be powered by a 933-megawatt natural gas power plant and operate off the grid, according to a permit application and research from Cleanview.

The project is projected to emit up to 4.5 million tons of carbon dioxide annually, a figure that surpasses the annual emissions of San Francisco. This development follows a 48 percent increase in greenhouse gas emissions for Google since 2019, driven by the intense energy requirements of artificial intelligence infrastructure.

Google spokesperson Chrissy Moy stated the company does not yet have a contract in place for the plant. However, the move reflects a broader industry shift as competitors including Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft utilize natural gas to sustain AI growth, challenging Google's previous pledge to achieve carbon neutrality by 2030.
