Democrats Win Primaries for Florida's 24th and 27th Districts
Oliver Gilbert and Eliott Rodriguez won Democratic primaries for Florida congressional seats, setting up general election matchups in November.
Democratic candidates Oliver Gilbert and Eliott Rodriguez secured primary victories for two Florida congressional seats on August 18, 2026.
Gilbert won the nomination for Florida's 24th Congressional District to succeed retiring Representative Frederica Wilson. A former mayor of Miami Gardens and Miami-Dade County Commissioner, Gilbert captured 34% of the vote in a seven-way race, defeating state Senator Shevrin Jones. His platform emphasized healthcare access, labor unions, and affordability. He will face Republican Te Brown and two non-partisan candidates in the November general election.
In Florida's 27th Congressional District, former CBS Miami news anchor Eliott Rodriguez won the Democratic primary. Rodriguez campaigned on addressing immigration abuses and the rising cost of living in Miami. He is scheduled to challenge incumbent Republican Congresswoman María Elvira Salazar on November 3. While the Democratic National Committee views Rodriguez as part of a broader effort to flip the House of Representatives, analysts currently consider Salazar the favorite for the seat.
