Meta Donates 1,000 Smart Glasses to Singapore Disability Groups
Meta donated 1,000 pairs of Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses and a $30,000 grant to four disability organizations in Singapore to improve accessibility.
Meta donated 1,000 pairs of Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses to four disability groups in Singapore to demonstrate the accessibility potential of AI wearables. The recipients include the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped, Guide Dogs Singapore, the Singapore Disability Sports Council, and Gardens by the Bay.
As part of the initiative, the company provided a $30,000 grant to the Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped to fund training classes. The smart glasses use AI to describe surroundings and read text aloud for users with visual impairments. Maxine Williams, Meta's Vice President of Accessibility, described the technology as potentially the most significant accessibility advancement since the smartphone.
The donation comes amid privacy concerns regarding the devices, which some have labeled pervert glasses due to reports of secret filming. Meta states that a white light alerts others when the device is recording, though privacy experts argue this indicator is insufficient. Meta has not disclosed the total value of the donation or if the program will expand to other regions.
