UN Reports Catastrophic Hunger and Shelter Crisis in Gaza

The United Nations reports that 94 percent of Gaza residents require shelter and 80 percent of families in shelters face critical or catastrophic hunger.

The United Nations reports that 94 percent of the Gaza Strip's 2.1 million residents require shelter and basic household assistance. Approximately 80 percent of families in shelters are experiencing critical or catastrophic hunger, with nearly two-thirds of the population living in tents or makeshift shelters prone to flooding and deterioration.

UN officials state that aid delivery is severely hindered by funding shortfalls and Israeli restrictions on the entry of heavy machinery, lubricants, and essential equipment. These constraints impede trash removal and the recovery of bodies from rubble. On Thursday, 50 bodies, including 19 children killed more than two years ago, were recovered and buried in Gaza City.

Despite a ceasefire agreement effective October 10, 2025, the UN and Palestinian officials report that Israeli military operations continue. Only two of six border crossings have reopened, and aid truck volumes frequently fall below half of the agreed 600-per-day target. The Gaza Government Media Office estimates that 90 percent of civilian infrastructure has been destroyed, with the UN estimating reconstruction costs at approximately $70 billion.

Humanitarian partners estimate a need for 562 million U.S. dollars for the emergency response, though only a fraction of the 165 million dollars requested for acute cases has been secured.
