Toyota Global Deliveries Fall 7.5% Amid China Sales Collapse

Toyota Motor Corp. reported a 7.5% decline in August global deliveries, driven by a 23% sales collapse in China due to electric-vehicle competition.

Toyota Motor Corp. reported a 7.5% decline in global group deliveries for August, marking the seventh consecutive month of falling sales. The downturn is primarily driven by a 23% collapse in sales within China, where the company faces intense competition from local electric-vehicle manufacturers and a consumer spending slump linked to a real estate crisis.

Performance varied by region. Toyota and Lexus saw growth in Japan and Europe, rising 9.1% and 2.6% respectively, fueled by strong demand for hybrid vehicles. Conversely, sales fell 4.4% in the United States and by more than a third in the Middle East.

The company continues to prioritize hybrid technology and projects that hybrid sales will exceed 5 million units for the first time in 2026. In the United States, Toyota benefits from tariffs that limit the entry of Chinese competitors such as BYD Co.
