AI Adoption Triggers Massive UK Finance Job Cuts
British financial firms are cutting staff at double the rate of other developed nations as AI replaces roles in accounting and investment analysis.
The United Kingdom's financial sector is facing severe labor market disruptions as artificial intelligence replaces human workers. Data from Morgan Stanley shows British companies reported a net staff reduction of approximately 8% due to AI in 2025, a rate double that of the United States, Germany, Japan, and Australia. The Office for National Statistics reports that job vacancies have nearly halved since 2022, with the steepest declines hitting AI-exposed roles like investment analysts and accountants.
HSBC Holdings Plc plans to cut its UK financial adviser ranks by nearly 70%, while JPMorgan Chase & Co. has reduced jobs in specific areas by 30% to 40%. Despite these cuts, JPMorgan is investing over £300 million in its Bournemouth technology center. Bank of England researchers note that 84% of finance occupations are exposed to AI, leaving the UK particularly vulnerable due to its reliance on service exports.
In response to these shifts, the UK Treasury and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology established the AI Economics Institute. The agency will research regional labor market impacts, specifically in towns like Swindon and Brighton, which rely heavily on administrative banking and insurance roles.
