Wang Yi Visits Cambodia, Thailand and Myanmar to Bolster Ties

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi toured Cambodia, Thailand, and Myanmar to expand security cooperation, combat transnational fraud, and mediate regional border disputes.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi conducted a three-country diplomatic tour of Southeast Asia from April 23 to April 26, 2026, aimed at positioning Beijing as a stable alternative to the United States. The mission focused on expanding strategic partnerships, managing cross-border threats, and supporting the national sovereignty of regional partners.

In Phnom Penh on April 23, Wang Yi met with Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn, where both sides focused on deepening cooperation in security and development. Wang expressed China's willingness to mediate border conflicts between Cambodia and Thailand to maintain regional stability.

On April 24, Wang traveled to Bangkok for meetings with Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow. The leaders elevated the fight against telecommunications fraud and online gambling from a law-enforcement issue to a diplomatic priority and initiated a new five-year action plan to align development strategies.

The tour concluded in Naypyidaw, Myanmar, where Wang Yi met with President U Min Aung Hlaing and Foreign Minister U Tin Maung Swe. Following the inauguration of President U Min Aung Hlaing in early April, Wang pledged China's support for Myanmar's national sovereignty and security. Myanmar committed to protecting Chinese personnel and projects and accelerating the China-Myanmar Economic Corridor while intensifying crackdowns on cyber-scams.
