Anthropic Appoints Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar as Chief Global Affairs Officer

Anthropic appointed Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar as its first chief global affairs officer to manage regulatory tensions and export controls imposed by the U.S. government.

Anthropic appointed Mariano-Florentino Cuéllar as its first chief global affairs officer on August 4, 2026. Based in San Francisco, Cuéllar will manage relationships with international partners and the U.S. government during a period of significant regulatory volatility.

The appointment follows a series of conflicts between the AI company and the administration of President Donald Trump. The U.S. government recently imposed export controls on the company's Mythos 5 and Fable 5 AI models and previously blacklisted Anthropic's technology over military red lines. Anthropic is currently challenging that blacklist designation in court.

Cuéllar, a former California Supreme Court justice and former president of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, was selected for his combined government experience and AI expertise. Reporting to President Daniela Amodei, he is tasked with finding common ground with the Republican administration to resolve these ongoing policy disputes.
