Erin Brockovich Launches National AI Data Center Tracking Map

Environmental activist Erin Brockovich launched a crowdsourced reporting platform and interactive map, brockovichdatacenter.com, to track the proliferation of AI data centers across the United States. The initiative aims to document the environmental and social impacts of the AI infrastructure boom, specifically focusing on massive water consumption, electricity demand, and noise pollution. By early June 2026, the project had grown to include over 6,600 submissions and a map of 3,674 reported locations, including operational, under-construction, and proposed facilities.

Brockovich's campaign highlights a pattern of secrecy, alleging that developers use nondisclosure agreements and covert tactics to shut residents out of decision-making processes. Notable points of contention include a 3-gigawatt project by MSB Global in Sulphur Springs, Texas; Meta's $27 billion project in Holly Ridge, Louisiana; and a $100 billion project backed by Kevin O'Leary in Box Elder County, Utah.

Industry and government leaders have responded to the growing backlash. Microsoft Corporation announced it would cease requesting NDAs during early development stages as part of a new Community-First AI Infrastructure Plan. In Utah, Governor Spencer Cox introduced a development framework to protect state water and air quality. Meanwhile, legislative efforts to curb expansion have seen mixed results, such as in Maine, where Governor Janet Mills vetoed a statewide ban on facilities drawing more than 20 megawatts of electricity.
