Kim Jong Un Oversees AI-Integrated Hypersonic Missile Launch

Kim Jong Un supervised the launch of an AI-integrated hypersonic missile that traveled up to 1,000 kilometers to strengthen North Korea's nuclear deterrent.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the launch of an intermediate-range hypersonic strategic missile on Saturday, October 3, 2026. The missile was fired from an eastern region near the coastal city of Wonsan and struck a designated target in the East Sea. While the South Korean military initially reported the missile traveled more than 700 kilometers, North Korean state media later claimed the weapon reached a target approximately 1,000 kilometers away.

State media reported that the missile utilizes artificial intelligence to adjust its trajectory and change its flight orbit at low altitudes, a capability intended to make attacks unavoidable. The drill served to train missile troops in operating the hypersonic system and to evaluate the operational readiness and efficiency of the nation's war deterrent. Kim Jong Un, accompanied by his wife Ri Sol-ju and daughter Ju-ae, praised the proficiency of the strategic missile soldiers.

The launch occurred amid heightened regional tensions. South Korea recently demanded an apology from Pyongyang following a blast in the Demilitarized Zone that wounded three soldiers, an incident North Korea has denied.
