MPs Pressure Royal Mail Over Severe Cumbria Delivery Delays
Members of Parliament Tim Farron and Michelle Scrogham are demanding action from Royal Mail and Ofcom over systemic postal failures in South Cumbria.
Members of Parliament Tim Farron and Michelle Scrogham are pressuring Royal Mail over severe letter delivery delays in South Cumbria. In the LA postcode, only 84.8% of First-Class letters are delivered the next working day, failing to meet the 93% target set by the regulator Ofcom.
These delays have caused residents to miss hospital appointments and face penalties for late bill payments. Tim Farron attributed the failures to staffing shortages, arguing that recruitment efforts will fail unless the company offers full-time hours. Michelle Scrogham stated that the problem was created by company bosses rather than staff and called on Ofcom to consider larger fines or a review of the company's royal charter, noting that previous penalties have not improved service.
Royal Mail responded by announcing a £500 million national investment over five years and initiating local recruitment at the Kendal Delivery Office. The company acknowledged the importance of timely deliveries for critical items like hospital appointments. Meanwhile, Ofcom has already fined the provider £21 million and launched an investigation into the missed delivery targets.
