UNDP Launches Initiatives to Attract Private Investment for Developing Nations

The United Nations Development Programme announced new partnerships to attract private investment and create jobs for youth in developing countries facing declining official aid.

The United Nations Development Programme announced new initiatives on October 13 to attract private investment and create jobs in developing countries experiencing a sharp decline in official development aid. Speaking at the IMF and World Bank annual meetings in Bangkok, UNDP Administrator Alexander De Croo stated the agency is expanding cooperation with the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and the European Investment Bank.

These initiatives focus on improving investment policies and aligning workforce skills with employer demand. The effort addresses a projected gap where only 400 million jobs are available for 1.2 billion young people entering the workforce over the next decade. De Croo warned that high energy costs, rising interest rates, and a severe El Niño weather event have strained fiscal buffers, leaving many countries vulnerable.

The UNDP is currently piloting these programs in Nepal, Yemen, Haiti, Lebanon, and Ghana. Additionally, the agency is partnering with Generali to expand insurance coverage for natural catastrophes in these regions.
