Amazon Issues Refunds in $2.5 Billion FTC Settlement

Amazon is distributing customer refunds as part of a $2.5 billion settlement with the FTC over deceptive Prime enrollment and cancellation practices.

The Federal Trade Commission is overseeing the distribution of customer refunds as part of a $2.5 billion settlement with Amazon regarding deceptive Amazon Prime subscription practices. The agreement includes a $1 billion civil penalty and $1.5 billion earmarked for consumer refunds.

Payments of up to $200 began distributing on October 1, 2026. The latest phase of payments expands eligibility to include users who utilized between 11 and 20 Prime benefits in a 12-month period, whereas previous distributions targeted those with fewer than 10 benefits. While some reports suggest a claim filing requirement, the FTC stated that payments are automatic and do not require consumers to submit forms or respond to notices.

The settlement follows allegations that Amazon employed dark patterns to trick users into signing up for Prime and implemented a cancellation process so complex that employees referred to it as the Iliad. Amazon did not admit liability as part of the agreement.
