Nigeria Plans Future Fuel Taxes After Economic Stabilization

Finance Minister Taiwo Oyedele announced that Nigeria will introduce fuel taxes to fund infrastructure and reserves once the economy stabilizes and household incomes rise.

Finance Minister and Coordinating Minister of the Economy Taiwo Oyedele announced that the Nigerian government plans to introduce fuel taxes once the national economy stabilizes and household incomes increase. Speaking at the 2026 International Monetary Fund and World Bank Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Oyedele stated that imposing levies immediately after the removal of petrol subsidies would be "insensitive" and would place undue pressure on citizens.

The government intends to use the revenue from these future taxes to fund road infrastructure and establish fuel reserves to buffer against future price shocks. Oyedele noted that Nigeria currently lacks such levies to reduce during market disruptions, whereas some other African nations apply between six and 10 different taxes on fuel.

Oyedele emphasized that the current priority is completing economic reforms and restoring growth to ensure the population can absorb additional costs. He confirmed that the implementation of any new tax will follow formal legal processes, including publication in the official government gazette to ensure transparency.
