Reese Witherspoon Lays Off Half of Hello Sunshine Staff

Reese Witherspoon laid off approximately 30 employees at Hello Sunshine to refocus on film and television after re-acquiring the company with Mediawan.

Production company Hello Sunshine laid off approximately 30 employees, representing nearly 50% of its workforce, on October 30, 2026. The cuts follow the re-acquisition of the company by co-founder Reese Witherspoon and the France-based conglomerate Mediawan from Candle Media.

The restructuring involves dismantling the company's direct-to-consumer division, which managed lifestyle products and subscriptions. Hello Sunshine will now refocus its operations on its core strategic areas: film, television production, and the Reese’s Book Club brand. The company now operates as part of Mediawan's portfolio of independent studios.

While the final transaction value was not disclosed, reports indicate the buyback price was in the low to mid eight figures. This represents a significant decline from the $900 million valuation Candle Media assigned the company in 2021. This valuation drop is attributed to a cooling streaming market, reduced studio spending, and the impact of the 2023 Hollywood strikes. Candle Media, backed by Blackstone, likely lost hundreds of millions of dollars on the investment. Hello Sunshine had previously undergone four rounds of staff reductions under Candle Media's leadership, including the 2023 closure of its kids and animation unit.
