Peter Obi Wins NDC Nomination for 2027 Presidential Race
Peter Obi secured the Nigeria Democratic Congress presidential ticket and nominated Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate for the 2027 general elections.
The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) ratified Peter Obi as its presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections during a special convention in Abuja on May 30, 2026. During the event, Obi nominated former Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso as his running mate. Both leaders had previously resigned from the African Democratic Congress in May following internal disputes. Kwankwaso formally accepted the nomination on June 1, describing the selection as a reflection of national unity.
In his acceptance speech, Obi detailed a rescue mission for Nigeria, pledging to increase power generation from 4,000 to 10,000 megawatts within four years and raise healthcare spending to 10% of GDP. He criticized current electricity access, stating that 100 million Nigerians lack power, and challenged official unemployment data, claiming youth unemployment exceeds 40%. Obi emphasized that Kwankwaso would be a full governance partner rather than a ceremonial figure.
Obi's candidacy drew immediate responses from diverse stakeholders. The Village Boys Movement praised the selection and initiated grassroots mobilization efforts. Conversely, government officials criticized his approach. Daniel Bwala, Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu, argued that Obi lacks practical implementation methods, while Minister Nyesom Wike asserted that Obi lacks the resilience and capacity to lead the country. Obi is expected to face incumbents and rivals, including President Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar, in the elections scheduled for January 16, 2027.
