Record 34 Candidates Contest Clacton By-Election on August 13

Tendring District Council confirmed a record 34 candidates will compete in the Clacton by-election on August 13 following the resignation of Nigel Farage.

Tendring District Council confirmed that a record 34 candidates will compete in the Clacton by-election on August 13. The number of candidates surpasses the previous record of 26 set during the 2008 Haltemprice and Howden by-election. The contest was triggered by the July 7 resignation of Nigel Farage, who is now standing as a candidate for Reform UK alongside other figures such as Laurence Fox of The Reclaim Party and representatives from the Official Monster Raving Loony Party.

Among the candidates is William Clouston, leader of the Social Democratic Party, who positioned his candidacy as a positive alternative to "Faragism." Clouston criticized the political establishment for ignoring voter concerns and argued that while Reform UK channels legitimate grievances, the party lacks the policy detail needed to fix the economic system. He specifically highlighted issues of mass migration, under-investment, and high energy prices.

Nearly 80,000 eligible electors will vote across 51 polling stations. Acting returning officer Ian Davidson urged residents to register by July 28 and ensured voters are aware of the requirement to possess accepted photo ID to cast their ballots.
