Wyoming Freedom Caucus Loses House Control in Primary Defeat

The Wyoming Freedom Caucus lost majority control of the state House after voters defeated over a dozen hard-line conservative incumbents in Tuesday's primary elections.

The Wyoming Freedom Caucus suffered a sweeping defeat in the August 19, 2026, primary elections, losing majority control of the state House of Representatives and failing to secure a majority in the state Senate. Approximately 13 to 14 incumbent House members were defeated, including founder John Bear and House Majority Floor Leader Scott Heiner. The group's influence in the 62-member House is expected to plummet from roughly 35 votes to just 10.

High-profile losses extended to House Speaker Chip Neiman, who failed in his bid to unseat Senate President Ogden Driskill. Additionally, caucus chair Rachel Williams lost her race for secretary of state to moderate Republican Robert Short. Analysts and critics attribute the losses to an extremist agenda and the Checkgate scandal, in which activist Rebecca Bextel was photographed distributing campaign checks to caucus members on the House floor. The group also faced backlash over funding cuts to the University of Wyoming and reliance on out-of-state PAC funding.

In other statewide races, State Senator Eric Barlow won the Republican nomination for governor, and U.S. Representative Harriet Hageman secured the nomination for the U.S. Senate seat. Secretary of State Chuck Gray, a founding member of the Freedom Caucus, won the Republican primary for the U.S. House. Governor Mark Gordon stated the results indicate that voters are prioritizing state interests over national political talking points.

Despite the losses, the Wyoming Freedom Caucus maintains that the results will not undo its previous policy wins and asserts that the organization is not going anywhere.
