Graham Platner Ends Maine Senate Bid Amid Rape Allegations

Democratic candidate Graham Platner suspended his U.S. Senate campaign in Maine following allegations of rape and the discovery of a Nazi tattoo.

Graham Platner, the Democratic nominee for the U.S. Senate in Maine, suspended his campaign on July 9, 2026, following a series of scandals and a rape allegation from former partner Jenny Racicot. While Platner denied the sexual assault claims in a farewell video, attributing his collapse to the "corporate media system," the candidate had already faced scrutiny over a Nazi 'Totenkopf' tattoo, anti-gay slurs in Reddit posts, and the misrepresentation of his elite Hotchkiss prep school background as that of a blue-collar oysterman.

Platner had won the June 9 primary with over 72% of the vote, bolstered by support from Senator Bernie Sanders and strategist Daniel Moraff. However, the candidacy collapsed quickly after the rape allegations surfaced, leading the Maine Democratic Party and Planned Parenthood Action Fund to withdraw support. Senator John Fetterman condemned Platner as a "predator" and a "Bona fide dirtbag," while Senator Sanders, who had previously dismissed concerns, called for his withdrawal.

Internal party conflict intensified as establishment Democrats criticized the poor vetting conducted by progressive operatives and the Fight Agency. Campaign adviser Morris Katz faced further accusations of threatening a former staffer to conceal Platner's abuse of women. The Maine Democratic Party must name a replacement by July 27, with potential candidates including Troy Jackson, Nirav Shah, and Shenna Bellows. The exit leaves the Democrats at a financial disadvantage, as Platner's $2.2 million in campaign funds are largely inaccessible to his successor, while Republican incumbent Susan Collins maintains $10 million.
