US Navy Suspends Search for Missing Sailor in Arabian Sea

The United States Navy suspended a 102-hour search for a sailor missing after an MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter made an emergency water landing on July 1.

The United States Navy suspended active search and rescue operations on July 5, 2026, for a sailor missing in the Arabian Sea. The incident began at 3:30 a.m. ET on July 1, when an MH-60S Sea Hawk helicopter assigned to the USS George H.W. Bush conducted an emergency water landing. While three of the four crew members were recovered in stable condition, one aircrewman from Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5 remained missing.

The coordinated effort lasted more than 102 hours and spanned over 14,000 square miles. The operation utilized assets from the U.S. Navy and U.S. Air Force, including P-8 Poseidon squadrons, Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyers, and aircraft from Carrier Air Wings 7 and 9. The USS Abraham Lincoln also assisted in the search.

Military officials stated there is no indication the emergency was caused by hostile action, and the cause of the landing remains under investigation. The identity of the missing sailor is being withheld until next-of-kin notification is complete. The event occurred during Operation Epic Fury, a campaign against Iran that has seen the U.S. military lose 42 aircraft as of mid-May.
