Smurfit Westrock to Acquire CMPC Chilean Business for $420 Million

Smurfit Westrock agreed to acquire the Chilean containerboard and corrugated business of Empresas CMPC S.A. for $420 million. The transaction includes three corrugated plants, one molded tray facility, and a recycled containerboard mill in Santiago that produces approximately 250,000 tons per year.

The company plans to fund the acquisition using its own liquid resources. The deal is expected to close in the first half of 2027, pending regulatory approvals. Smurfit Westrock intends to integrate recycled paper into its existing operations in Argentina, Peru, and Ecuador, while routing kraftliner from North America and Brazil into the newly acquired Chilean assets.

CEO Tony Smurfit described the acquisition as a rare opportunity to acquire a unique business, noting that CMPC brings tremendous expertise to the organization. Alvaro Henao, CEO of Smurfit Westrock Latam, stated that the move firmly establishes the company as the leading player in Chile.
