ASOS Shares Plunge After App Sends Breach Warning

ASOS shares fell over 13% after thousands of customers received a push notification claiming hackers compromised the company's Snowflake cloud data instance.

Shares of online fashion retailer ASOS fell as much as 13.2% on Tuesday following a highly unusual incident where thousands of customers received a push notification via the company's mobile app claiming a data breach. The message, which appeared to be intended for the company's IT staff and data protection officer, stated, "We have fully compromised the Snowflake instance. Engage with us, or we will leak it." The notification included a link to a Telegram channel linked to the Xuanye group gateway.

ASOS uses Snowflake, a cloud platform, to store and analyze demographic, transactional, and behavioral data for its customers. While some users reported website issues around 10 am via Downdetector, both the website and mobile app remained operational.

ASOS is currently investigating the incident and has not yet confirmed if any data was actually accessed. Cybersecurity experts have described the push notification as an aggressive extortion tactic and have warned customers to remain vigilant against potential phishing attempts following the event.
