UDMR Agrees to Support Luca Niculescu Government Confidence Vote
The Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania will provide conditional six-month support for Prime Minister-designate Luca Niculescu's government to ensure minority rights and education funding.
The Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR) will support the confidence vote for the government proposed by Prime Minister-designate Luca Niculescu. UDMR President Kelemen Hunor announced that while the party will not join the government cabinet, it will sign a support agreement lasting six months, extending until April or May.
This support is conditional on the government guaranteeing the rights of national minorities, specifically the Hungarian minority. The UDMR requires commitments for adequate funding, teachers, and textbooks for Hungarian-language education from kindergarten through university. Hunor stated that the agreement focuses on budget adjustments, the deficit, and the adoption of the 2027 state budget, with a particular emphasis on local government funding and economic stimulus.
The decision follows the dismissal of the previous government in May. The UDMR cited the need for government assistance for vulnerable citizens facing rising energy costs as a primary driver for the agreement.
