India Criticizes Pakistan Democracy Amid Imran Khan Imprisonment

The Ministry of External Affairs of India stated on December 8, 2025, that "democracy and Pakistan don't go together," responding to the ongoing political instability and weakening democratic institutions in the neighboring country. Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal noted that India is closely monitoring developments in Pakistan and condemned reports of Afghan civilian casualties resulting from border clashes between Pakistani and Afghan forces.

These remarks coincide with a deepening conflict between the Pakistani military and former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who has been incarcerated since August 2023 following a corruption conviction. Khan accused Army Chief Asim Munir of being a "mentally ill person" who destroyed the constitution and subjected him to mental torture. In response, military spokesperson Lt. Gen. Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry described Khan as a "narcissist" and "mentally ill."

Khan recently filed a plea in the Islamabad High Court for medical examinations at Shaukat Khanum Hospital. His political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, has organized protests outside the court and Adiala Jail to demand more consistent family access to the former leader. While Khan's sister reported his health as fine, she confirmed he remains angry over his restricted communication and treatment.
