United Airlines Cancels Rome Flight After 12-Hour Delay
United Airlines canceled Flight 884 from Washington to Rome after mechanical failures and weather delays caused the crew to exceed legal duty limits.
United Airlines canceled Flight 884 from Washington Dulles International Airport to Rome's Fiumicino Airport on October 2 after passengers faced nearly 12 hours of delays. Originally scheduled for 5:35 p.m., the flight was grounded by a sequence of complications including a cockpit malfunction, severe thunderstorms, a faulty door seal, and a mishap with the aircraft's pushback tug.
The aircraft returned to the gate multiple times for refueling and mechanical inspections. United Airlines stated that a new crew was brought in and a maintenance issue was resolved, but the plane required another inspection after pushing back from the gate. The flight was ultimately canceled around 4 a.m. the following morning because the crew reached legal duty-time limits.
United Airlines rebooked the affected passengers on an extra flight that departed Saturday evening just before 7 p.m. This sequence of events resulted in a total delay of over 25 hours for the passengers.
