South Africa Prepares for November 4 Local Government Elections
South African citizens will vote for local government representatives on November 4, with government agencies extending hours to ensure voter identification.
South Africans will cast ballots in the 2026 Local Government Elections on Wednesday, November 4. The Electoral Commission of South Africa has mandated that eligible citizens aged 18 and older present a green, bar-coded ID book or a temporary identification certificate at their registered voting stations to participate.
To support this process, the Department of Home Affairs is extending its operational hours from November 2 to 4, allowing citizens more time to obtain necessary identity documents. Special voters are scheduled to cast their ballots on November 2 and 3. The South African Local Government Association has urged high voter turnout to elect ethical leaders for the seventh administration, noting that the elections follow the launch of the Revised White Paper on Local Government intended to improve service delivery.
In a separate electoral development, Auditor-Treasurer Kelly Hotovec reported that over 1,000 early voters have participated in Brown County, Minnesota. Hotovec noted that approximately 2,200 of 4,100 absentee ballots have been returned ahead of the local Election Day.
