Sri Lanka and Laos Launch Postal Modernization Plans

Sri Lanka and Laos announced separate strategic initiatives to digitize postal services and enhance regional connectivity to support e-commerce and national development.

Postal services in Sri Lanka and Laos are undergoing significant modernization efforts to integrate digital infrastructure and sustainable transport. In Sri Lanka, the Department of Posts of Sri Lanka aims to achieve full digitization by 2027. Postmaster General Ruwan Sathkumara announced that the agency will also introduce electric motorcycles and three-wheelers into its delivery fleet starting next year to increase operational efficiency.

Simultaneously, the Ministry of Technology and Communications of Laos established strategic priorities for its national postal sector for 2026 to 2030. Minister Santisouk Simmalavong announced the plan on World Post Day, detailing a goal to transform Laos into a regional postal connectivity hub. This strategy utilizes railways, economic corridors, and dry ports to improve logistics.

The Lao initiative focuses on three pillars: enhancing regional connectivity, implementing digital infrastructure—such as smart delivery systems and a national digital addressing system—and expanding service access to remote rural areas. The ministry views these upgrades as essential infrastructure to drive national commerce and socio-economic development.
