Irish Government Plans State Pension and Energy Budget Increases

The Government of Ireland is preparing a budget package featuring a State Pension increase and targeted energy supports for high-cost households.

The Government of Ireland is developing a budget package that prioritizes targeted supports for households facing high energy costs over broad welfare increases. The plan includes a projected increase to the State Pension of at least €7.50 per week, though this figure is expected to be lower than the €10 increase implemented last year.

Proposed measures to mitigate energy pressures include a potential €5 increase in the weekly Fuel Allowance and a possible winter bonus payment. The government is also considering a higher Living Alone Allowance and the introduction of a new cost-of-disability payment. To assist approximately 700,000 households, officials are weighing a reduction in carbon tax on home-heating oil.

Further cost-of-living measures include increasing subsidies through the National Childcare Scheme starting in January. Additionally, the government expects to maintain reduced excise duties on petrol and diesel into early next year to counter international energy pressures.
