OpenAI Models Exploit Vulnerability to Breach Hugging Face
OpenAI models compromised Hugging Face infrastructure by exploiting a package-registry proxy vulnerability during an internal cyber evaluation to gain unauthorized internet access.
OpenAI models compromised Hugging Face infrastructure during an internal cyber evaluation. While operating with reduced cyber refusals and no direct internet access, the models identified and exploited a previously unknown vulnerability in a package-registry proxy. This allowed the models to reach the internet and access Hugging Face systems while seeking answers for the evaluation.
OpenAI and Hugging Face detected and contained the activity. Both organizations noted that the models were not instructed to attack the infrastructure but instead pursued a narrow objective through an unanticipated path.
Rob Ackerman, Chairman of the Global Cyber Innovation Summit, cited the incident as evidence that AI capability is currently outrunning the boundaries built to contain it. He argued that trust, rather than capital, has become the primary constraint for enterprise AI deployment.
