Democrat Jon Rosenthal Wins Texas Railroad Commission Seat
Democrat Jon Rosenthal defeated Republican Bo French to become the first Democrat on the Texas Railroad Commission since 1990.
Democratic state Representative Jon Rosenthal declared victory Tuesday night in the race for the Texas Railroad Commission, defeating Republican Bo French. The result marks the first time a Democrat has held a seat on the three-member regulatory body since 1990. Rosenthal, a former oil field engineer, held a commanding lead of 56% to 42% with nearly 60% of ballots counted before French conceded.
The campaign was defined by a severe backlash against Bo French following racist social media posts targeting South Asian students at the University of Texas at Austin. French claimed foreigners were displacing Americans and suggested the Republican Party should embrace Islamophobia. These comments drew condemnation from prominent Republicans, including Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick and former GOP consultant Karl Rove, while Fort Worth Mayor Mattie Parker endorsed Rosenthal.
Rosenthal campaigned on banning industry donations to commissioners, implementing weatherization requirements for gas production, and regulating pollution and wastewater. Although he is expected to be outvoted 2-1 on the commission, he inherits a budget exceeding half a billion dollars during a period of high energy demand. His victory coincided with a broader Democratic sweep in Texas, including wins for the governor's mansion and the U.S. Senate, amid voter dissatisfaction with President Donald Trump's economic management and the war against Iran.
