Origin Energy Explores Data Center at Eraring Power Station

Origin Energy is conducting a preliminary feasibility assessment to determine if it can build a data center at its Eraring coal-fired power station in Lake Macquarie. Chief Executive Frank Calabria announced the investigation during the Australian Energy Council conference in Sydney, stating that the company is also exploring potential partnerships for the project.

The initiative responds to the growing energy requirements of artificial intelligence, cloud storage, and digital services. The proposal arrives as Eraring prepares for its scheduled closure in April 2029 and a transition toward renewable energy, which includes a four-phase battery rollout at the site.

Lake Macquarie Mayor Adam Shultz expressed openness to the project, noting that the council would welcome initiatives providing new employment opportunities for the local workforce following the power station's decommissioning.
