Uttar Pradesh Tables Rs 59,019 Crore Supplementary Budget

The Government of Uttar Pradesh tabled its first supplementary budget for the 2026-27 financial year on August 4 in Lucknow, seeking an additional expenditure of Rs 59,019.54 crore. Finance Minister Suresh Kumar Khanna detailed that the budget allocates Rs 17,399.50 crore for revenue expenditure and Rs 41,620.04 crore for capital expenditure. The largest single allocation of Rs 22,107.88 crore is designated for heavy and medium industries, with further funding targeted for health services, energy, and rural development.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath chaired a cabinet meeting prior to the presentation to align the budget with the completion of ongoing government schemes. Speaker Satish Mahana described the introduction of the supplementary budget as a routine constitutional exercise. However, the session was disrupted when Samajwadi Party members entered the Well of the House to protest. The opposition demanded a discussion regarding the alleged theft of donations at the Ram temple, a request that Speaker Mahana denied.

While the government asserts that the state's fiscal deficit remains within prescribed limits, opposition members, including MLA Atul Pradhan, questioned the rationale for the additional funds and demanded accountability for previous budget implementations. The disruptions occurred during a four-day Monsoon session running from August 3 to August 6, which also included planned discussions on issues affecting women, youth, and farmers.
