Lawrence Wong Outlines PAP Renewal and Worker Support Strategy

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong pledged increased support for struggling workers and announced a strategy to renew the People's Action Party's membership and ideas.

Prime Minister Lawrence Wong pledged continued government support for workers facing job instability and rising living costs during the People's Action Party (PAP) Awards and Conference 2026. Speaking at the Singapore Expo on October 25, Wong acknowledged that despite a 5.4 percent third-quarter economic growth rate, lower-wage workers and those in their 40s and 50s continue to struggle.

Wong outlined a comprehensive agenda for the current term, which includes collaborating with the National Trades Union Congress to help workers adapt to economic shifts and providing up to $70,000 per child through the SG Child Support Package. He emphasized that a political mandate is a responsibility rather than an entitlement, referencing the PAP's 65.57 percent vote share in the 2025 General Election.

Beyond economic policy, Wong announced a strategy for the PAP to renew itself by broadening membership and refreshing its ideas to align with the evolving aspirations of citizens. This renewal process involves passing leadership to younger members and utilizing the 'Friends of the PAP' network to engage individuals who are not full party members. Wong noted that activist feedback has already influenced policies regarding caregiving grants and paternity leave, and he announced updates to the PAP SG app to modernize party participation.
