Al-Shabaab Ambush Leaves Dozens of Somali Troops Dead

Al-Shabaab militants ambushed a Somali government convoy in southern Somalia, with conflicting reports on casualties and the seizure of Turkish-supplied military equipment.

Al-Shabaab militants launched a major attack on a Somali government military convoy near Jameeca village in the Bay region of southern Somalia on Monday. The Al-Qaeda-linked group claimed to have killed 321 Turkish-trained troops and allied militia members near the city of Leego in the Lower Shabelle region, reporting the seizure of prisoners, weapons, and Turkish-supplied armored vehicles.

Al-Shabaab used vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices to target the convoy. The Somali Ministry of Defence contradicted the militant claims, stating that government forces killed approximately 75 militants and wounded 56 others during what it characterized as an assault on militant positions. While the ministry acknowledged that explosives damaged army transport, it did not disclose official government losses.

Individual soldiers and a surviving military officer reported higher casualties than the government admitted, with one officer stating at least 20 soldiers died and another reporting that 40 dead and over 100 wounded were transported to Mogadishu. The Somali government has called an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss the losses. The escalation occurs as Turkey continues to provide fighter jet support and training, while the United States has ceased funding a vital United Nations logistics mission for combat operations.
