Taiwan Repels Chinese Vessels Amid Increased Military Incursions

Taiwan's military and coast guard responded to a surge in Chinese aircraft and naval vessels operating around the island and the Pratas Islands from October 17 to 19.

The Ministry of National Defence of Taiwan tracked a series of Chinese military incursions between October 17 and 19, 2026. On Monday, authorities detected five People's Liberation Army aircraft, six naval vessels, and nine official ships, with three aircraft crossing the Taiwan Strait median line into the northern, central, and southwestern Air Defence Identification Zone.

This activity followed similar patterns on Sunday and Saturday. On Sunday, two aircraft breached the median line, while Saturday saw nine aircraft sorties, five of which crossed the median line. In response, the Republic of China Armed Forces deployed joint combat air patrols, naval ships, and land-based missile systems.

Simultaneously, the Coast Guard Administration drove away 16 Chinese vessels on Sunday during coordinated maritime harassment operations near the main island and the Pratas Islands. The fleet included coast guard, research, and fishing vessels. Taiwan characterized these actions as hybrid warfare and an attempt by Beijing to unilaterally alter the status quo and create a false impression of jurisdiction.

Official data highlights a broader escalation in pressure. The Coast Guard Administration reported a record 244 Chinese vessels detected around the main island in July, a sharp increase from 30 vessels in May. This surge includes the strategic use of research vessels to assert jurisdiction over surrounding waters.
