BRS Threatens Protests Over Hyderabad Drinking Water Crisis
Bharat Rashtra Samithi legislators threatened protests against Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy over water shortages in Hyderabad and mismanagement of the Kaleshwaram project.
Legislators from the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) threatened to protest at the residence of Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on October 24, 2026, after inspecting the Kannepalli pump house and Medigadda Barrage. BRS leaders alleged that the Congress-led government is neglecting to pump Godavari water, allowing 750 TMC to flow into the sea since June while Hyderabad residents receive low-pressure water only once every three days.
BRS MLA KP Vivekanand Goud accused the Chief Minister of threatening engineers who suggested lifting water, while other party members demanded the immediate resumption of water lifting to stabilize groundwater levels. The opposition also criticized the government for failing to repair the Medigadda barrage following a suspected blast.
In response, Telangana Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy and Minister Vivek Venkata Swamy characterized the Kaleshwaram project as an engineering disaster. They attributed the collapse of the Medigadda Barrage to corruption and incompetence during the previous BRS administration. Minister D. Sridhar Babu dismissed the BRS site visits as hollow posturing by the party responsible for the infrastructure's destruction.
Amid the political dispute, Col Parikshit Mehra, chairman of the rehabilitation committee, reported that geotechnical and geophysical testing is ongoing at the distressed sites following safety reviews by the National Disaster Management Authority.
