Governor-elect Xavier Becerra Prioritizes Cost of Living in First Press Conference

Governor-elect Xavier Becerra held his first press conference in Sacramento after defeating Republican Steve Hilton in the gubernatorial race. Accompanied by Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas and Senate President pro Tempore Monique Limón, Becerra identified the cost of living as his primary focus for his upcoming term.

Becerra stated that everything should be on the table regarding tax and revenue policy, suggesting that wealthy residents who pay lower tax rates than essential workers like teachers and nurses are not paying their fair share. Despite these comments, he declined to make specific policy commitments, telling reporters not to play a game of asking him to commit because he did not get elected doing so.

Beyond affordability, Becerra emphasized his intent to partner with legislative leaders and continue expanding healthcare access. He avoided questions regarding Governor Gavin Newsom's recent commutation of death penalty cases during the event.
