Tamil Nadu Votes in First Electoral Test for TVK Government
Voters in Madurantakam and Dharapuram cast ballots on October 6 in by-elections serving as the first electoral test for Chief Minister Vijay's TVK government.
Voting took place on October 6 in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram Assembly constituencies of Tamil Nadu, alongside a by-election in Thattanchavady, Puducherry. These contests mark the first electoral test for the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) government since it assumed power on April 23.
The Tamil Nadu by-elections were triggered by the resignations of AIADMK legislators Maragatham Kumaravel and Sathyabama, who joined the TVK and are now contesting to regain their seats as TVK candidates. Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay campaigned aggressively for four days, including a September 30 roadshow in Dharapuram, to support the nominees. The results are scheduled for announcement on October 9.
The race is a five-cornered fight involving the TVK, DMK, AIADMK, NTK, and the CPI and CPM. While the CPI and CPM support the TVK government, they are contesting these specific seats independently. In Madurantakam, 27 candidates are competing for 213,788 registered voters, while 22 candidates are contesting in Dharapuram for 223,306 voters.
To prevent irregularities, the Election Commission of India banned public meetings until 6 AM on polling day and deployed heavy security. This included Central Armed Police Forces in Madurantakam and approximately 1,000 police personnel in Dharapuram. Major political figures, including DMK president M.K. Stalin and AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami, also campaigned for their respective nominees.
