Action Against Hunger Demands Justice for Muttur Massacre

The international NGO Action Against Hunger (ACF) requested that the Sri Lankan government open a new investigation in June 2026 into the 2006 Muttur massacre. On August 6, 2006, 17 aid workers, primarily Tamil staff employed by ACF, were lined up and shot at the organization's compound in Muttur.

While Sri Lankan security forces have denied responsibility, investigations conducted by ACF in 2013 and the United Nations Office on Human Rights in 2014 found reasonable grounds to believe security forces carried out the extrajudicial executions. Families of the victims report that witness intimidation continues and there is ongoing pressure for them to remain silent.

The renewed demand for justice follows the Government of Sri Lanka's signing of the Declaration for the Protection of Humanitarian Personnel, a commitment to end impunity for attacks on aid workers. Family members and colleagues of the victims are now seeking international pressure to ensure a credible and impartial investigation is conducted.
