Adani Group Launches ₹48,000 Crore Power Plant in Assam

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and Adani Group Director Jeet Adani laid the foundation stone for a 3,200 MW ultra-supercritical thermal power plant in Chapar, Dhubri district, on September 20, 2026. The project represents an investment of approximately ₹48,000 crore and is the largest single industrial investment in the history of Assam. The plant will consist of four 800 MW units, with commissioning scheduled in phases starting in December 2030 and full completion targeted for December 2032.

The facility aims to reduce Assam's reliance on external power sources, as the state currently generates only 400 MW against a peak demand of 3,026 MW. The project is expected to create 20,000 to 25,000 construction jobs and 5,000 permanent positions. This initiative is part of a larger ₹63,000-crore power sector investment in the state, which includes ₹15,000 crore for two pumped storage plants via Adani Green Energy Limited.

Beyond energy, the Adani Group has invested over ₹80,000 crore in Assam across aviation, cement, and smart metering, including the development of an aero-city near the Guwahati airport terminal. Jeet Adani stated the group aims to exceed a ₹1 lakh crore investment target for the Northeast region over the next decade. To support the local community, the group also plans to establish a Vidya Mandir School to provide free education in the project area.
