US Department of Defense Integrates Project Maven AI Into Combat

The United States Department of Defense has deployed Project Maven, a long-term campaign launched in 2017 to incorporate artificial intelligence into combat operations and modernize warfare to counter threats from China. While the project initially struggled with unreliable algorithms that misidentified natural features as vehicles or buildings, the system eventually succeeded in detecting hidden combatants and distinguishing civilians to prevent accidental strikes.

Currently, the United States Central Command uses AI tools to generate points of interest, including target locations, elevations, and descriptions. The command utilizes the Maven Smart System and Target Workbench to determine specific weapon pairings and strike orders. These capabilities are actively used to share targeting information with Ukraine and conduct operations in Syria, Iraq, and Yemen.

Despite these operational successes, officials have acknowledged significant risks. These include algorithmic drift, hallucinations, and the danger that AI chatbots could inadvertently escalate conflicts.
