South Korea Reports North Korean Economic Recovery via Russian Ties

South Korea's Unification Ministry reports that North Korea's economy is recovering through high-tech cooperation with Russia and rebounding relations with China.

The Ministry of Unification of South Korea announced on April 15, 2026, that the economy of North Korea has entered a recovery phase after a period of recession. According to a five-year plan for inter-Korean relations spanning 2026 to 2030, the ministry attributes this growth to alliance-level cooperation with Russia, which includes the transfer of technology and high-tech weapons. This economic shift aligns with the Lee Jae Myung administration's policy of peaceful coexistence.

North Korea is reportedly utilizing the geopolitical rivalry between the United States and China to enhance its strategic autonomy and negotiating power while working to restore practical relations with China. The recovery is further supported by deepening institutional ties with the Russian Federation, following North Korea's deployment of troops to assist Russia in its war against Ukraine.

As part of this expanded cooperation, the General Federation of Trade Unions of Korea and the Federation of Independent Trade Unions of Russia signed a memorandum of understanding in Pyongyang. This agreement aims to expand labor cooperation and friendship between the two nations.
