Keisha Lance Bottoms and Tanya Miller Win Georgia Elections

Keisha Lance Bottoms and Tanya Miller won historic victories in Georgia, becoming the first Black women elected as governor and attorney general, respectively.

Keisha Lance Bottoms won the Georgia gubernatorial election on Tuesday, becoming the first Black woman to govern a U.S. state and the first Democrat to hold the office since 1998. Bottoms defeated Republican Rick Jackson, a billionaire healthcare staffing founder who spent over $200 million of his own funds. Unofficial results show Bottoms winning with 54.4% of the vote to Jackson's 45.6%.

Bottoms campaigned on affordability measures, including lowering the gasoline tax and eliminating taxes on baby formula, diapers, and feminine hygiene products. She also advocated for Medicaid expansion and the repeal of the state's abortion ban after fetal cardiac activity is detected. She is scheduled to be sworn in January, where she will face a Republican-dominated General Assembly.

In a parallel victory, Tanya Miller was elected as Georgia's next attorney general, becoming the first woman and first Black woman to hold the position. A Democrat and former federal prosecutor, Miller defeated Republican state Senator Brian Strickland. With 86.9% of the vote counted, Miller held 55.4% of the vote compared to Strickland's 44.6%. Miller succeeds Chris Carr and campaigned on priorities including public safety, government accountability, and combating human trafficking.
