Mayor Mamdani Adds Little Italy to Official Ethnic Enclave Map
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani reversed a decision to omit Little Italy and other historic immigrant groups from the city's official ethnic enclaves map.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced on Friday that Little Italy and other historic neighborhoods will be added to the city's official Ethnic Enclaves map. The reversal follows widespread backlash after a May update to the map, originally created in 2023, identified 30 multicultural neighborhoods—including Little Pakistan and Little Yemen—but excluded historic Italian, Irish, Greek, and Jewish communities.
Critics accused the administration of erasing the history of these groups, with some alleging the omissions were political rewards for communities that supported Mamdani's socialist campaign. The Italian American Civil Rights League further claimed the mayor attempted to erase Italian Americans and previously denied a permit for Unity Day 2026.
Mamdani stated the list was not intended to be an exhaustive directory of the more than 200 ethnic communities in the city. Following a formal request from the National Italian American Foundation and an open letter from civil rights leaders, the mayor committed to making additional changes to ensure better representation for the city's diverse immigrant history.
