Meloni Urges EU to Appoint Single Ukraine Peace Envoy

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni called for a unified EU representative in Ukraine peace talks to prevent the bloc from becoming diplomatically irrelevant.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni warned that the European Union risks becoming irrelevant in Ukraine peace negotiations because of a proliferation of competing diplomatic initiatives. In a letter to EU Council President Antonio Costa, Meloni argued that the current lack of a unified approach undermines the bloc's credibility and creates an impression of "random order."

Meloni urged European Union leaders to appoint a single representative with a clear mandate to speak on behalf of the bloc. She stated that Italy will not accept commitments negotiated without a formal EU mandate.

The Prime Minister requested that the European Council discuss the proposal during an informal meeting in Dublin next week. A formal decision is expected at a December summit following coordination with partners, including Britain and Norway.
