Former Autodesk Leader Advocates AI Over Corporate Empire-Building
Colin Piper argues that AI enables leaner marketing teams to outperform large corporate hierarchies, citing his experience at Autodesk and BuildOps.
BuildOps CMO Colin Piper is challenging the corporate practice of empire-building, where leaders increase headcount to signal internal status and secure larger budgets. Piper claims this growth often creates excessive management layers that hinder productivity, citing his previous tenure at Autodesk as an example.
According to Piper, his department at Autodesk grew to more than 130 people, which slowed campaign execution from a 13-week target to over 20 weeks. He argues that AI now allows smaller teams to achieve higher efficiency. At BuildOps, Piper uses enterprise-level AI to orchestrate agents, reducing a campaign's time-to-market to less than six weeks with a team of only 20 marketers.
Autodesk responded to these claims by stating it has modernized and transformed its marketing operations over the last four years to embrace AI and accountability.
