Hacking Attempts Disrupt Federal Election Commission Filing System

The Federal Election Commission is working to restore its electronic filing system after hacking attempts disrupted mandatory campaign spending reports ahead of midterm elections.

Hacking attempts targeted the Federal Election Commission website on Monday, disrupting the agency's electronic filing system starting around 10 p.m. ET. The outage occurs one week before the November 3 midterm elections, preventing political organizations from submitting mandatory 24-hour and 48-hour spending reports.

This disruption reduces financial disclosure during the final stretch of the campaign. The agency clarified that the outage will not affect the administration of elections or the ability of voters to cast ballots, and users can still search the website for past reports.

FEC IT staff are currently working to restore service. The Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency and the FBI have not yet commented on the incident.
