Australian Stock Market Snaps Five-Session Winning Streak
The S&P/ASX 200 Index declined on Friday following negative cues from Wall Street, with technology and financial stocks leading the losses.
The S&P/ASX 200 Index ended a five-session winning streak on Friday, August 7, 2026, closing at 9,262.70. The benchmark index fell 0.09 percent after hitting an intraday low of 9,216.70, following negative market cues from Wall Street. The broader All Ordinaries Index also declined 0.07 percent to finish at 9,445.20.
Sector performance was mixed. Financial and technology stocks faced significant weakness, with Commonwealth Bank and Westpac shares falling nearly 2 percent. Technology firms Block and Afterpay experienced sharper declines, with shares sliding almost 5 percent. Major mining companies Rio Tinto and BHP Group saw slight decreases of 0.1 percent.
These losses were partially offset by gains in the energy and gold mining sectors. Woodside Energy and Santos saw increases, while Genesis Minerals contributed to the offset through gains in gold mining.
