Nationalist Parties Win Bosnia and Herzegovina General Elections

Nationalist parties won along ethnic lines in Bosnia and Herzegovina's October 4 elections, with Milorad Dodik claiming victory for the SNSD despite being barred from office.

Bosnia and Herzegovina held general elections on October 4, 2026, resulting in a victory for nationalist parties along ethnic lines. Preliminary results from over 90% of polling stations show incumbents Denis Becirovic and Zeljka Cvijanovic leading the races for the Bosniak and Serb seats of the tripartite presidency, respectively. Darijana Filipovic of the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ BiH) won the Croat seat, replacing Zeljko Komsic.

In the Republika Srpska entity, the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD) swept the board, with Savo Minic becoming president and Cvijanovic retaining her presidency seat with 55.34% of the vote. Although barred from public office due to a conviction, SNSD leader Milorad Dodik declared victory for his party and announced plans to dismantle state powers, calling for the return of the army, border police, and intelligence services to Republika Srpska. Dodik attributed the party's success to the victory of U.S. President Donald Trump.

In the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Party of Democratic Action (SDA) won the most seats in parliament, though its leader, Bakir Izetbegovic, lost the Bosniak presidency seat to Becirovic. Outgoing member Zeljko Komsic stated the results indicate a growing ethnic homogenization of the electorate and a lack of support for a civic state.

The elections featured the first nationwide use of biometric identification and electronic ballot scanners to curb fraud. While these tools allowed the Central Election Commission of Bosnia and Herzegovina to release results quickly, they were linked to a record-low turnout of approximately 41% to 42%, as the system prevented voting for deceased or absent citizens.
