IRS Launches New Mobile App to Modernize Taxpayer Services
The Internal Revenue Service launched a new mobile application to replace IRS2Go, allowing taxpayers to track refunds and make payments directly from their phones.
The Internal Revenue Service launched a new official mobile application in late September 2026 to replace the 15-year-old IRS2Go software. Available for free on the Apple App Store and Google Play, the app allows taxpayers to check the status of refunds and amended returns, view account balances, make payments, access tax transcripts, and retrieve Identity Protection PINs.
CEO Frank J. Bisignano stated the platform is "100%, 100% secure" and part of a broader digital-first modernization effort. The launch follows a surge in digital demand, with the agency recording 600 million online inquiries last year. While the app expands secure account services for individuals in English and Spanish, business tax accounts and professional services remain exclusive to IRS.gov.
Alongside the launch, the agency addressed fraud and security. Bisignano noted that the IRS has reduced a backlog of identity theft cases by more than half from a 2024 peak of 500,000, though he clarified that artificial intelligence is not used for these specific cases. IRS officials warned taxpayers to avoid fraudulent look-alike applications and emphasized that the agency never requests sensitive personal or financial information through unsolicited text messages, emails, or pop-up alerts.
